The Australian striker thinks on their day, ATK is the best team in ISL.

David Williams’ heroics in the second leg of this play-offs had aided ATK to outclass Bengaluru FC and book their berth in the final of Indian Super League (ISL) 2019-20 season.

Together with the Australian striker, wing-back Prabir Das also was instrumental in ATK’s triumph as he had supplied two assists in the game, one of which was for Williams’ all-important third aim.

Praising teammate Prabir, the ATK talisman said, “What I’ve observed in the training is that he (Prabir Das) takes constructive criticism very well, he works and hard and he always wants to improve. He’s done very well for himself but most importantly for the group. He has some very great aids.

“Sometimes I look at the pitch quality and I think maybe he’d have had more assists if the pitches were improved. In Salt Lake, sometimes the grass is slightly high and there have been other pitches that have never been great. If I can recollect, Kerala and Jamshedpur only have very good pitches. Everyone else is here and there. Goa looks great watching on the tv. The standard of pitches delivers better technical soccer. Quality of pitches gets the most out of football but this isn’t an excuse.”

The former Wellington Phoenix striker oozed confidence before confronting high-flying Chennaiyin FC in the final and that he implied that in their day, ATK would be the best team in the league.

“For me, I am quite confident about the group’s ability. We’ve beaten Chennaiyin once and they’ve beaten us once. So it’s going to be a fair game. Both are coming to this final having scored many goals and are feeling confident. There are no teams that go into a closing without being convinced. When ATK is at their best, we’re the best team in the league and if that’s the case on Saturday night then we’ll win it. It’s up to us to provide everything. We’ve done all of the hard work the whole season, so we do not have to work any harder. We know our job and leave nothing on the pitch.”

When asked about his views on the outbreak of this novel Coronavirus disease, Williams stated,”If we’re considering that then we’re in the wrong business. There are those who will look after that. We have our own jobs and we must focus on that. For us, it’s not in the back of our minds. We’re well cared for here, we’ve got excellent medical support. Our focus is on the game.

“If you shake your hands there’s not any difference in being marked in your own corner. You’re more likely to rub heads or chest to chest with a defender on a set-piece. Handshake is far better to be farther away in my view. If we play with a contact sport, we need to address these things. Provided that we aren’t kissing each other we’re all perfect.”
