The Portuguese coach endorsed his side after a disappointing loss to Chennaiyin.
Mumbai City’s dream of making it to the playoffs ended with a defeat to Chennaiyin FC in their final match of the season at home on Friday.
Portuguese coach Jorge Costa endorsed his side regardless of the defeat and suggested he was proud of his players and the character they showed during the season.
“It was a clear red card (Sourav Das) so nothing to say. Vishal Kaith’s one I am not certain, I did not see on TV. But I’m here for a couple of decades and you’ve heard me whining about all of the things that have occurred, not just the referees but about everything. I believe that it’s not fair to them that after not reaching the top four, we begin complaining.
“What I need to say is that I am quite proud of coaching these players. We know the problems we’ve had since the start of the season. We fought until the final second. This is the picture of the group, we fight until the end. I am really proud of all of my players. We made mistakes, we’re from the top four. In football this occurs, none of us is perfect. I told my players that there’s nothing to be ashamed of.”
Costa indicated it was an evenly-contested game as teams wanted to shed.
“It was not a perfect match for either team. Now we had two teams that did not wish to lose. Chennaiyin are doing an incredible job and they deserve to be in the top four.”
The former FC Porto played implied that even though he would like to continue as the head coach of Mumbai City FC, he’s still unsure about his future.
“If they need me I will stay because I like being in Mumbai. When I came to India it was an excellent surprise. There are other things, of course, we must go over. I don’t have a contract for next year. We must see.”
